How Much to Spend on Bridal Shower Gifts

Are you new to bridal showers? Don’t stress. Gift giving for a bridal shower is not much different than giving for a birthday.

Consider how close you are to the bride. Closest friends and family may feel inclined to spend a little more, while more distant friends and family may keep their expectations a little lower.

For a bridal shower, we recommend spending $30-50.

This can be a little more if you are family or very close friends. Maybe you have something special in mind that you know she’ll love.

How Much to Spend on Wedding Gifts

As a guest, it is a privilege to be a witness to the new couple’s marriage and give a gift to help them kickstart their lives together.

Depending on how close to the family you are may determine how much you will spend or give (cash gifts will likely be welcome).

For wedding gifts to the bride and groom, we recommend spending around $75. This can be a little less ($50) if you are more distant acquaintance, or a little more ($100+) if you are very close.

You might have the benefit of the bride and groom supplying a Gift Registry. If this is the case, simply check out their wishlist and find something that fits your budget. Easy!

How Much to Spend on Wedding Party Gifts

For those getting married (congrats!) the expenses definitely add up. But knowing that your closest friends and family are there for you and supporting you on your big day means the world.

But weddings require budgets to keep expenses under control. Total wedding budgets vary greatly. Whatever your total money budget is for you wedding, we recommend setting aside 2%-5% for gifts.

If you have a large wedding crew, this number could be smaller. If you are having a big and lavish wedding with no expense spared, this number could be bigger.

Bridesmaids & Groomsmen Gifts

This is your A-team. The ones who will keep you in good company and good spirits on your big day.

They will be celebrating you, so make sure you take a moment to celebrate them with lovey bridesmaid gifts!

For your party of bridesmaids and groomsmen, we recommend spending about $40-$75 per person.

Again, if you have an extra large party, this number could be lower. And for a wedding where you are spending a lot on extras, it is probably better to spend more on your closest companions.

Many brides enjoy giving “Will You Be My Bridesmaid” proposal boxes, which average around $25-40. Don’t forget to include those in your wedding budget!

Close Family & Helpers

It is also nice and sometimes expected to give a gift to wedding helpers and close family, especially the parents and grandparents of the bride and groom.

For close family and helpers, we recommend a budget of $15-$30.

Parents and grandparents may receive a personalized gift, such as a framed photo or a bottle of their favorite wine.

Extended family and helpers may receive something less personal and expensive, such as jewelry or a book. These are thoughtful gestures that go a long way to show your appreciation.

Wedding Favors for Other Attendees

Sometimes the extended family and other attendees may receive a parting gift to remember the occasion by.

How Much to Spend on Graduation Gifts

When graduation season roles around each spring, you can hopefully expect some ceremony invites.

Twelve years (and at least four more for college) of work for a certificate is nothing to squint at, and we should take the time and resources to properly congratulate the graduates in our lives.

Even if you can’t attend the ceremony, sending a gift to the graduate is a kind gesture. If you send cash, that start-up money will certainly be appreciated!

High School Graduation

Graduates are going through one of the few initiation ceremonies we have for young people entering into society. Your gift is a way to say “You belong” and help them take their first steps.

When: The 25th day of Kislev in the Hebrew calendar, so check your calendar each year.

23. Engagements

It’s traditional to give your new fiancée an engagement gift. Sometimes it’s expensive jewelry, other times something to help plan the wedding (like a leather bound wedding planner), or something practical for the home (in anticipation of your life together). Or just something sweet and romantic!

While engagements don’t require a gift from other people (that usually comes later with the showers and the actual wedding), a nice card would be appreciated. If it’s a close friend or family member, your enthusiastic congrats will be the perfect gift!

24. Halloween

When: October 31st

Gifts aren’t typically given, in the traditional sense, on Halloween. Rather, kids walk around the neighborhood dressed up in fun or scary costumes and “trick or treat” the neighbors. This is a tradition that began with the idea of “give me a treat, or I’ll play a trick on you!”

Nowadays, it’s mostly harmless fun where the little hoodlums knock on a door, say “trick or treat!” and then hold out their buckets to be filled with candy. 25. Chinese New Year

When: between January 21st and February 20th.

A traditional gift is a red packet filled with money.

26. New Year’s (or New Year’s Eve)

When: January 1st (or December 31st)

New Year’s Eve is a party night, so plan accordingly! While it isn’t traditional to give gifts, it is traditional to give kisses at midnight!

27. Memorial Day (American)

When: the last Monday in May.

Memorial Day is set aside as a time of remembrance for those who have died in service to their country. It is appropriate to give flowers or some other grave décor to honor the memory of fallen heroes.

28. Veteran’s Day

When: November 11th (in the United States)

Veteran’s Day is a time to honor the living military veterans among us. Whether they are currently serving or retired, be sure to say “Thank you!” to a veteran.

Service members – active duty or retired – do not want or expect gifts on Veteran’s Day. So it’s not really one of the main gift occasions.

But you can show your appreciation in other ways. Buy them lunch or a cup of coffee. For elderly veterans, mow their lawn, weed their garden, or find some other act of service that expresses your thanks.

29. Earth Day / Arbor Day

Earth Day: April 22

Both of these holidays occur in the last quarter of April each year. Interestingly, while nowadays Earth Day is the “big one,” Arbor Day is actually a national holiday in the USA, while Earth Day is not.

Both special days emphasize taking care of the planet. Arbor Day is more specifically geared towards planting trees, so this is a wonderful time to send someone the gift of a tree planting dedication.

When: The 14th day of the Hebrew month of Adar, which is typically between late February to mid-March

Juneteenth honors the emancipation of African-American slaves in the United States. On June 19th, 1865, news of the end of the Civil War (and thus the emancipation of slaves) reached one of the last holdouts in Galveston, Texas.

The best luaus have roast pig plus tons of other foods, a beachside feel, and plenty of music. If a beach just isn’t in your ‘hood, lakes and rivers work in a pinch, or simply utilize a pool.

Have lots of towels and sunscreen, and don’t forget to serve drinks (both alcohol and non-alcoholic) in large, plastic glasses with umbrellas. 

4. Casino Night

Casino nights are an excellent way to socialize and still have something to do with your hands! (Introverts unite.)

Simply provide a few different tables and plenty of new packs of cards. You can place bets with real money, or use Peanut M&Ms, Skittles, or Hershey’s Kisses. 

Of course, casinos are known for their yummy cocktails and snacks, so be sure to provide those for your party guests as well, or go all out with a ritzy buffet. You can hire real, certified dealers, or learn the ins and outs of basic games yourself.

Colorful cake and snacks, bright yellow lemonade with crazy straws, and upbeat music will keep the guests happily telling stories and getting to know one another, instead of being sad to see their friend go off on a new adventure. 

6. Backyard Campfire

If your backyard is spacious and has a fire pit, you simply cannot go wrong with a backyard campfire.

Provide plenty of seating and blankets, some music (or have the musical among you bring their guitars and singing voices), some warm beverages like hot spiced cider, cocoa, or hot buttered rum, and of course plenty of things to roast over the flames.

7. Slumber Party

Be silly and have one last, big slumber party between the gals that’s full of fond memories! Have fun watching The Notebook, drinking wine, painting your nails, and talking about the boys.

Or if those things don’t float you and your gal’s boats, watch sports, drink whiskey, cook a meal together, and THEN talk about the boys. 

Make sure there’s plenty of floor space for air mattresses, tons of pillows, and extra blankets.

8. Holiday Party

Perfect theme idea if their moving away party is near a big holiday like Christmas, Halloween, July 4th... you get the idea!

Decorating is easy-peasy when you have a dollar store or party store, and don’t forget the cake. Passing out souvenirs to remember the night by is fun, too: simple Christmas tree ornaments, Halloween candy, or bunny ears at Easter are fun to take home.

9. Wild West

Channel your inner child by throwing a Wild West party for the farewell event. Get as cheesy as you like with bolo ties, oversized cowboy hats, spurs, and stick-on mustaches.

Provide prizes for game winners, a country music playlist, maybe even see about renting a mechanical bull!

Charcuterie boards are all the rage and for good reason: they’re delicious and look gorgeous! Provide lots of trays filled with different cheeses, cured meats, fresh berries and apples, pickled snacks, and of course, crackers.

Then, naturally, comes the wine! Local varieties are great if you can, but as long as there are plenty of reds and whites, everyone will be happy.

It might be a nice touch to let the guests go home with their wine glass as a souvenir. After all, it’s not like the guest of honor will want to pack them.

I mean, hey, we’re in the 20s now anyway… okay, not the Gadsby-era 1920s, but still. Go back 100 years and have your guests dress up flapper style for the ladies and dapper as ever for the men. This means gloves and hats and pearls and sophistication!

Jazz music, art deco, prohibition, and speakeasies were all the rage in the 1920s, so try to include these as well. And don’t forget the crime! Bonnie and Clyde, crime bosses, and police are fun alternative costumes.

Pick a Date/Time. Really, the only important opinion is yours (the party planner) and theirs (the guest of honor). But you’ll want to coordinate to figure out what works best for most guests. Typical times are Friday nights, Saturday afternoons or evenings, and Sunday afternoons.

If you want to tip (or you’re pretty sure you’re supposed to), here’s a tip amount cheat sheet.

Good-to-Great product/service:

• 20% of bill before coupons/taxes.
• $1 per drink/bag/person/day/etc
• This is your base rate for superior service; more is always accepted and appreciated!

Poor-to-Unimpressive product/service:

• 10% of bill before coupons/taxes
• $2-3 total for all drinks/bags/people/days/etc

If you’re unsure:

• 15% is always acceptable
• $1 per drink/item/person is pretty standard
• $5 (simply give a fiver)

You should tip (or tip extra) when:

• Your order was large, custom, or complicated
• Service goes above and beyond
• Employees are taking multiple trips to your car

The Simple Guide to Tipping Right

Never Tip List

There are some professionals that do not take tips. Some legally cannot accept tips, while for others tipping is either demeaning or simply unneccesary.

• Medical professionals
• Law enforcement
• Fire department
• Teachers
• Package delivery
• Flight attendants
• Sports Coaches
• Employees
• When a sign says “no tipping”

For these professionals, if you would like to show your appreciation it is generally appropriate to give a small gift instead of a tip. For instance, a treat for them to share with the office/team, a small plant like a cactus, or coffee/travel mug filled with little goodies.

Exceptions: Law enforcement and other government employees. Also, postal workers cannot accept gifts with a value over $20

You can give a special gift to an individual, especially if you have developed a good relationship with them. Most of the time, however, it is best to give a gift to the entire crew, staff, shift, or department instead of a one-on-one gift.

Tip Etiquette When Using Coupons

You should never, ever feel bad about using coupons.

The business created those offers voluntarily in hopes that they would get you to try their product or service. Without the coupon, you might not even be there for all they know.

Even so, you should be thoughtful and considerate when using a coupon. The business is giving you their service at a reduced rate, but their employee is still actually taking care of you.

So proper tip etiquette when using coupons means that you at least tip based on what the full amount on the bill would have been.

If it’s a very generous deal, such as buy-one-get-one-free or 40-50% off your total, I like to tip a little more than usual. Instead of 20% for great service and a delicious meal, do 25% (on the original price), or if you would have typically tipped $10, go with $15 or even $20.

On the other hand, if it’s a somewhat inconsequential coupon that you happened to have, and only gets you 50 cents off your $5.85 coffee or a few dollars off your meal at a sit-down restaurant, just do your typical tip.

Tip Etiquette When In Groups

Groups are extra-difficult for service industries to work with. All too often groups are loud, unruly, and act overly entitled.

Plus it seems like many groups will actually tip less or not at all. Perhaps they think service staff will not notice in the big crowd. So if you’re in a group, be sure to tip, and tip well.

At the same time, it’s their job. Restaurants and other businesses want groups to come because, like all customers, they buy things. So don’t feel like you need to tip extra when you received shoddy service.

If you’re at a restaurant in a group and the waiter acts visibly annoyed at you (assuming your group isn’t tearing the place apart), as a customer that is annoying. You don’t owe that service person anything for poor or non-existent service.

Tips for Group Tips

So, how should you tip when in groups? The same basic restaurant tip etiquette applies. Give 15-20% of the bill. If the service was good, tip extra – groups just are more difficult and more work.

What if the restaurant adds an automatic group gratuity? Then don’t tip – you’ve already done so. If the server goes above and beyond, you’re certainly welcome to leave a little extra. But there is no obligation to tip above what you’ve already been charged.

Are groups really harder for the wait staff? Yes. Absolutely, 100%. Groups tend to need more little things (like that one guy who just drinks water still needs refills) and make bigger messes (you know it’s true). Also, groups take up multiple tables and tend to stay much longer than typical diners, which reduces the overall earning potential for the server. They’ll often be distracted and forget things like, oh, leaving a tip.

What if we are paying separately? If each person, couple, or family in the group gets a separate bill, make sure to mention tipping with a casual, “Hey everyone, let’s make sure to tip because they didn’t add a group gratuity.” Or, “That waitress was amazing, I think we should add a good tip to our checks.” Or, “Guys, we were super-annoying and also spilled all those drinks. Let’s all leave a big tip.”

In the United States, restaurant and bar service staff (waiters, waitresses, and bartenders) are typically paid well below federal minimum wage, usually just a few dollars per hour.

The rationale for this is that part of their compensation comes from tips. Fair or not, it’s the law.

So with this arrangement comes a cultural and social expectation that restaurant service members and bartenders should be tipped.

Restaurant: 15-20% of the total bill.

Bar: $1 per “simple” drink, and $2 per cocktail if ordering only drinks. If you order food, follow the same rates as restaurant tipping.

Coffee Shops, Fast-Food, & Food Trucks

Employees at coffee shops, drive-thru and fast food restaurants, bakeries, and other similar locales are paid at least the minimum wage.

Thus, while tipping is often expected (and always appreciated) in coffee shops and cafes, it is not socially obligatory in the same way as is your tip at a bar or restaurant.

If you don’t see a tip jar, don’t tip. However, if there is a tip jar, use your judgment. You shouldn’t be expected to tip prior to even tasting the goods, but if you’re a regular, leave a few bucks.

Fast-food: Most fast-food chains do not allow their employees to accept tips and pay at least minimum wage.

Food trucks: If there’s a tip jar, and depending on what is served, at the very least drop in your spare change. $1-2 is pretty typical for food trucks, or 10-15% of the total.

Coffee shop: Spare change up to $1 per drink/menu item.

You’ve seen it. Those kids who are glued to a phone and don’t even look up when their parents introduce them to you. Kids who don’t know how to shake a hand, kids who boss their parents around in the store, kids who put up a stink when they don’t get their way. Kids whose first language is sarcasm (with a minor in four-letter words), yet don’t have categories for “please,” “thank you,” or “excuse me.”

These children need to learn good manners, proper etiquette, and basic kindness towards others.

Kids these days. *Shakes head.*

The thing I didn’t expect, though, was that these would be my kids.

Yep. Don’t get me wrong, we taught our kids to say “please” and “thank you.” Except it didn’t stick.

We taught our kids that interrupting, yelling, and fighting is wrong. They still did it.

At the table, we emphasized serving others first, chewing with your mouth closed, and sitting straight. But they didn’t.

The reality is that teaching good manners to kids is hard. It’s not simply a matter of telling them to do certain things and not do other things; you have to train them. As parents, I don’t think we understood that right away (we had to be trained ourselves, haha).

Training involves repetition. How many times does a gymnast stretch? How many miles are run, day after day, before a track meet victory? How many stitches go into a quilt, how many hours at the batting cage before the game-winning home run, how many years of study and practice before a successful surgery?

The answer: lots. And lots. And lots.

And our kids are getting it. They’re not perfect, but they are improving. They can speak to adults, answer questions, say please and thank you, respectfully sit through church and small groups, help with the dishes, and earn high marks for classroom behavior.

So don’t be discouraged when your kids don’t turn into little angels the first time you go over the good manners chart. It will take time, practice, explanation, repetition, more repetition, more repetition, more explanation, more practice, and even more time. Then you’ll just cycle through and do it all again.

But you’ll get there! There’s a reason children don’t grow up overnight. Raising kids and teaching them proper behavior takes time. But the results will be well worth it.

The Good Manners Chart

So let’s just get right to it. Here is the good manners chart, which details 10 basic manners and the reasons why they are important, plus 10 table manners and 10 manners to practice at school.

Good Manners Definition

Good manners means
polite behavior that shows other people respect, courtesy, and kindness.

A good definition of manners for kids is knowing how to treat people well at all times.

10 Basic Good Manners for Kids

1. Say “please” whenever you ask for anything
2. Say “thank you” whenever you are given anything
3. Respond to people when they speak to you
4. Do not interrupt; wait for others to finish speaking
5. If you’re unsure if you can do something, ask permission
6. Cover your mouth when you cough, sneeze, or yawn
7. Keep negative opinions to yourself
8. Do not make fun of others or use crude language
9. Knock (and wait for a response) before entering
10. Help others whenever you can

Table Manners for Kids

1. Wash Hands Before Eating

Everyone’s hands get dirty throughout the day. The last thing you want to do is bring dirt, grime, and germs to a place where people will be eating – yourself included!

Since the quickest way to get sick is by putting germy, icky stuff into your mouth, you are treating yourself and others with kindness when you wash your hands before a meal.

Example

Go to the nearest bathroom (often the kitchen sink will be in use by the cook or at least by dirty dishes) and wash your hands for 15-30 seconds using hand soap. Dry off well and then come promptly to the dinner table.

2. Put away phones and electronics

At mealtimes, you should silence and put away all electronic devices. And because phones still buzz and vibrate when silenced, it is ideal to place cell phones and other devices away from the table.

If you are in your own home, set up a location to put devices. If you are a guest, you can put your phone in your pocket but it may be better to put it in a jacket pocket or purse hung up on a coat rack.

When our family goes anywhere my children almost always bring a little backpack or handbag with notebooks, crafts, and small toys. This would be a good location for electronic devices. Personally, we don’t allow our kids to bring any sort of electronics to other people’s homes.

Exceptions are when you are expecting a call, or when parents have requested that the child be available to contact. If this is the case, tell the adults at the table that you are expecting a call and then excuse yourself from the table when it comes.

Example

“I’m sorry my phone is ringing, I’ll put it on silent. Do you have a place I could put this out-of-the-way?”

“My parents are going to call around 5:30, so please excuse me if I answer the phone.” [When call comes, say “excuse me” and go away from the table to talk]

Cell phones and other electronics have become a major part of our lives, so we will have a more complete section on cell phone etiquette later on as well. See below.

3. Sit up straight

Sitting up straight in your chair looks better than slouching. When you sit up, not only do you put on a better and more attractive appearance, but you also show interest in what is happening around you. You are ready to partake of the food and the conversation.

In contrast, a slouching person seems tired, sad, uninterested and uninteresting. When you are bent over in your seat, you communicate to those around you that the food is unappetizing and your fellow diners and boring. So show respect and kindness to the person who prepared the meal and to the rest of the family by sitting up straight.

This is also the same reason you should not put your elbows on the table.

4. Place Your Napkin In Your Lap and Use It

When you place your napkin in your lap, it helps to catch any crumbs that may fall into your lap. It is also out-of-the-way from all the food on the table, and easy for you to grab and use if needed.

And you probably will need it. That’s perfectly fine; it’s better to use your napkin than have a food-stained chin or cheek. To use, gently dab wherever needed. Dabbing (no, not that kind!) is a more genteel and sophisticated movement than wiping. You should avoid wiping across your face.

5. Chew with your mouth closed

No one wants to see your food as it is being chewed. Keep you mouth closed when eating. This will also help you make less “smacking” sounds when chewing your food.

6. Don’t reach across the table

When you reach across the table, it makes you appear greedy, needy, and impatient. Plus you run the risk of knocking things over, spilling, draping your clothing into food, or dropping hairs and crumbs onto the table. So never reach across the table.

Instead, politely ask for things to be passed to you.

Example

“Elijah, could you please pass the ketchup?”

7. Don’t Ask for Dessert

Dessert is my favorite part of the meal, too! But don’t worry – if there is dessert, it will be offered at the appropriate time.

8. Ask to be Excused

It is impolite to simply get up and walk away from the table. Instead, ask your parents if you can be excused from the table.

If they say no, stay around and learn to enjoy talking with the rest of the family.

Example

“Mom, may I please be excused from the table?”

9. Take Over Your Plate

You used the plate, and you made it dirty. The very least you can do to help those responsible for cleaning up is to take the plate into the kitchen.

If you are in someone else’s home, ask where to put your plate. By doing so, you show respect to those who prepared and those who clean up after the meal by being willing to help out, even in this small way. It is a very polite gesture.

10. Ask How You Can Help with Cleanup

Again, since you got to eat because of all the cooking mess that was made, it is polite to offer to help clean up afterwards.

Don’t say “Do I have to help with anything?” That makes it sound like a chore and a burden. Instead, say, “How can I help clean up?” Saying it this way shows that you are truly grateful for the meal, and are willing to show your thankfulness by helping.

Example

“Thank you for dinner, Mom! How can I help clean up?”

“Thank you for the delicious lasagna, Mr. Stewart. Can I help clean the kitchen?”

Manners at School

1. Listen to your teacher (and other adults)

The teacher, helpers, secretaries, lunch servers, and other adults at the school are there to help you learn and grow as person. They care for you, and are in charge for a reason. So show respect and kindness to your teacher and other adults in authority over you by listening to them.

Listen to them respectfully, answer when spoken to, and then make sure you do what they say. This is not only good manners but also the best way to get learn while you are at school.

2. Be kind to everyone, not just your friends

It’s tempting to just hang out with your friends. You like them, you talk to them, you have inside jokes and clubs and secret handshakes, all that fun stuff.

While there is nothing wrong with having close friends, it is still impolite to purposefully exclude others, turn your back on them, whisper in front of others, and ignore the other kids. When you do these things it shows that you like certain people and not others. It’s a form of favoritism, and it’s rude.

Instead, go out of your way to show kindness to everyone. Include other children in your games and clubs. Invite the new kid to sit by you at lunch or to do a project with you. Who knows, maybe you’ll make a new friend!

3. Wait your turn

It is very rude and impolite to cut in front of others. The other people in line or who raised their hand first have been waiting longer than you. It won’t hurt you any to wait for a few minutes, and it shows that the others who are in line are just as important as anyone else. Waiting your turn is a way to show respect to your classmates and help promote order for your teacher and the other adults.

4. Say “excuse me” if you bump into someone

School can be a busy place. There’s people everywhere, lots of classmates buzzing around your classroom, halls and assemblies and lunch lines. Do your best to avoid bumping into people by paying attention and keeping your hands to yourself. Don’t swing your arms around or break dance in a busy hallway, and respect the rules for hallways, lunch lines, and other areas.

If you do accidentally touch or bump into someone, look at them and say “excuse me.” If you knock someone over, be sure to apologize and help them up.

5. Raise your hand before you speak

In a room full of students, this is the best way to make sure you do not interrupt others and wait your turn. The teacher can’t call on every student every time, and it is not fair for one student to shout out all the answers or try to take over the topic of conversation.

So you are helping maintain order and respecting the other students (as well as the teacher) when you raise your hand and wait to be called upon before speaking.

6. Keep your area clean and organized

When you keep your area clean and organized, you are practicing self-control. You will be able to do many good things (and avoid many bad things) if you can learn self-control.

Additionally, when you keep a tidy desk, table, cubby, shelf, or drawer, you show kindness to your teacher and the other students by helping keep the classroom clean and looking good.

7. Tidy & restock supply areas

This is a way that you can be helpful and considerate towards others. When you keep the supply areas clean, tidy, and organized, you help the other students in completing their projects. And when you restock things that run out and don’t make a mess, you help the teacher avoid one more of their many tasks and responsibilities.

8. Don’t cause distractions in class

This means don’t whisper or pass notes while instruction is happening; don’t draw attention to yourself unless you are asking a question or in need help; refrain from humming or tapping during tests or reading time; don’t talk to your friends when others are working on a project.

9. Do Your homework on time

If you are assigned homework, make sure that you work on it right away at home so that you are able to turn it in on time. Tell your parents when you have work to do or homework due, and ask them for a quiet space and/or help if you need it.

It’s very important that you return your homework to your teacher when it is due. This will help you with learning what you need to learn, and it is also good manners because it helps your teacher to review and grade it on schedule.

10. Don’t Brag or Mock

It is impolite to always focus attention on yourself. Don’t brag; meaning, don’t tell the whole class every time you ace a test, get top marks, or otherwise succeed at something. This goes back to point #8, “Don’t Cause Distractions.” When you do this, you are showing honor to yourself rather than trying to respect others.

Instead, focus attention on others. Praise when they do well, encourage them when they are having difficulty, and help them when needed.

On the flip side, don’t make fun of or “mock” the work of your classmates. Perhaps you are very good at art and another student is not, or maybe you are a fast reader and another student is still learning their letters. Or maybe you just feel like another child is a dweeb. Whatever the reason, if you make fun of the way someone else looks, acts, or talks then you are not showing them kindness and respect.

Cell Phone Etiquette (Applies to all electronics)

• When a visitor comes to your home, put away your device, stand up, and greet them. This is a polite gesture of respect to any visitor, even if the visitor is only there to talk to the parents
• Put all electronics away at the dinner table
• Don’t use devices in a library, church, at a restaurant table, or in a theater
• Put away your device when it is time to socialize and speak with others
• Do not text during a meeting or class
• When someone speaks to you, immediately put down your device and respond to them. If you are in the middle of something urgent, you may say, “Please excuse me a moment while I finish this.” Finish, then put the devise away and talk

10 Bad Manners to Avoid

Here are some examples of bad manners that you should avoid. For parents, this list can actually be a surprisingly effective teaching tool (in moderation).

Set aside a few times where you teach proper manners by modeling (or having your kids model) these poor behaviors. They will have a blast pretending to be bad, and in doing so will learn what is appropriate and what is inappropriate.

1. Poor table manners: Talking with your mouth full, chewing with your mouth open, reaching across everyone, putting elbows on the table, making a mess
2. Using foul language: Four-letter words, body function jokes, religious exclamations
3. Insulting others: Name-calling, teasing, making fun of people for how they look or act, treating people poorly because they are different from you
4. Being negative: Whining, complaining, expressing frustration, pouting, saying “I hate this,” or “I’m bored,” giving “the silent treatment”
5. Being inconsiderate: Making everyone always play what you want, cutting in line, making a mess without cleaning it up
6. Interrupting: Talking over other people, speaking while others are talking, changing the subject when others are having a conversation, talking at a theater or in class
7. Silence: Not saying anything when someone gives you something or tries to talk with you
8. Yelling: Trying to talk to someone through a door or in another room, screaming when you are angry, throwing a tantrum when you don’t get your way
9. Disobeying: Ignoring the instruction of your parents, teachers, coaches, or others; not following rules and laws; simply not paying attention and then forgetting what your parents or others ask you to do
10. Leaving a mess: Getting out food, crafts, or toys without putting them away, leaving doors and cupboards open, running through the house with muddy shoes

I wrote a whole big long post about gift giving etiquette with 15 tips, but all the little rules and guidelines are just ways to help you think about things from the other person’s perspective. Ultimately, it is all about the other person. It’s about the recipient.

Well, the same thing goes when receiving a gift. How do you receive a gift the right way? Just think about how would you like the recipient to react when you give them a present. That’s how you should react when you receive a gift.

Again, it is simply a matter of being mindful and others-centered.

Sill, it’s a good idea to think through the specifics of gift etiquette. Let’s talk about how to receive a gift properly and how to do so with the right kind of response.

Below are the very best gift receiving etiquette tips for any occasion. In a word (well, two words): Show thankfulness.

That’s it. Say thank you, and show it with your manner. Isn’t that exactly how you would like someone to react when you give them a gift? Exactly.

So here we go: Gift etiquette on how to receive a gift the right way. See below for tips and a quick TL;DR at the end.

What to do when you receive a gift

Say “Thank you” with sincerity.

If you have a gift for them, go get it. Never, ever lie and say you have one but forgot it. People know that trick and it is lame, so avoid it.

Consider keeping an emergency stash of $10-25 coffee shop or online gift certificates on hand in a card, especially around the holidays.

If you don’t have a gift for them, DO NOT comment about how sorry you are that you didn’t get them anything. They don’t (or shouldn’t) care. If you start down that road, you make them feel bad that you feel bad, and it just ruins the moment. Simply say thanks, and tell them how touched and excited you are.

Ask if you can open it right away. The person who got you the gift wants to see how thrilled you are at receiving it. Occasionally (depending on the situation) they may want it to be a special surprise saved for later, which is why it is good to ask.

If you receive something you don’t like or can’t use, respond to the spirit of the gift rather than the gift itself.

Comment on a specific thing about the gift that you appreciate.

If someone has given a gift card or money, let them know how you might use it.

If it is something you already have, don’t say so. Instead, say something like, “Wow, what a great gift!”

Later, write a Thank You note. Like, literally write it.

Specific things to say when you receive a gift

When someone gives you a gift, it is important to them that the gift is well-received. The trouble with getting a gift, however, is that sometimes it is a terrible choice. Sometimes you already have the item, or simpy have no use for it. Sometimes it’s offensive to your beliefs and the things you care deeply about; other times the gift has the right sort of theme but is low quality or your expertise on the subject is way beyond the gift.

In any of those instances and more, you will want to be ready to respond well. An easy way to do this is to expect a “dud” gift and prepare to respond to that. Like I said above, always respond to the spirit of the gift rather than the gift itself.

You should also have a few specific stock phrases in mind. These are comments that show your thankfulness and appreciation for the gift giver’s thoughtfulness while not lying about it.

• Thank you!
• Thanks, this really means a lot to me!
• No way! Thank you, I’m really into ____!
• Wow, what a great gift!
• I’m totally blessed that you would give me this!
• This is so unique!
• You are so thoughtful!
• Thank you for thinking of me!

Exchanging bad gifts

Since it is a gift, you are free to do with it as you please. However, use your discretion. If the giver of the gift is easily hurt or offended, you would do well to just set the gift aside in your closet.

Otherwise, you can exchange it for something that you would like and use. For instance, if you received a coffee maker but already have one, just tell the person if they ask that you have duplicates and so you exchanged it for a cold brew coffee system or a new tea kettle.

TL;DR

• Say thank you with sincerity.

So here are fifteen simple rules of gift giving etiquette. These etiquette tips will make your gift stand out while being suited to the occasion and, most importantly, treasured by the recipient.

Gift Giving Etiquette

Rule #1: Don’t Make It About You

This should be obvious, but because of simple human nature we tend to forget it so easily. Repeat after me:

Gift giving is not about me.

Gift giving… is not…about me.

It is so easy to twist it though, isn’t it? Every holiday and birthday, every wedding, we want to express something, show off, impress, stand out from the crowd. (Note the title of this post… playing to your vanity a bit, mebbe?)

The basic rule of gift giving etiquette, the ‘one rule to ring them all’ is this: Don’t make it about you. It’s about the recipient.

Don’t spend so much that it makes some sort of statement about your wealth or generosity. If your finances are tight, consider a DIY gift or an act of service, and by all means be thrifty when possible, but unless you’re in true financial straights, avoid being concerned primarily with costs.

Another trap is to think that just because you like something, everyone else should like it too. Try not to win them over to a new style of music or somehow magically generate a love of reading with the book or e-reader that you give. Chances are, your gift will be glanced at and then stuck on a shelf and forgotten.

Instead, follow Rule #2.

Rule #2: Listen, Pay Attention, Study

Listen to what the person talks about or gets passionate about. Pay attention to their likes and dislikes, favorite songs and movies and books, whether they like coffee. You don’t want to be the person who gets a vegetarian a gift card to Outback Steakhouse, or a Yankees cap to a Mets fan.

If you study a person, you will always find out something about what they love.

Maybe it is an outward and public thing like a favorite restaurant (get a gift card!).

Perhaps it is something more personal and subtle like how they would always pick blackberries with Grandma on their birthday, and cook a pie together. With something like that you can get creative. Take them blackberry picking and bake a pie together, or get a framed art print of blackberries. You’ll know what is best, if you pay attention.

Rule #3: Consider Consumable Gifts

When we talk about great gift ideas, I think we all might naturally lean towards something long-lasting, something that will be used repeatedly and appreciated long after the gift is given.

But – especially when you don’t know the person extremely well – it can be tough to find that perfect gift. One way to give a memorable gift is to give something that can be used up.

Seems kinda backwards, right?

But it really is not. If you follow Rule #2 (Listen, Pay Attention), one of the easiest things to note about someone is what kind of food or drink they enjoy. Then, go out and buy them something top-notch, that they normally wouldn’t buy for themselves.

Think of a $25 bottle of wine when they typically get two buck chuck or sometimes “splurge” on a nice $10 selection. Think of a fancy cheese platter from a local organic dairy, or a box of chocolates from a craft chocolatier.

Have you ever had that happen? Someone gives you something truly decadent… do you remember it? I sure do. I’ve received a handful of really nice consumable gifts, and I remember them because they were a solid step above what I normally get for myself.

And lastly, consider the cost in comparison than what you would get instead. Think of a really nice 6-pack of craft brew, chocolate, jerky, specialty candy, etc. These top-shelf items are just as much or cheaper than most office or holiday party gift limits, so a good quality consumable gift won’t set you back any more than you would already spend.

Rule #4: Avoid Self-Improvement Gifts

This is another obvious one, but it needs to be said. Here’s a brief but suggestive list of self-improvement gift ideas to avoid:

• Weight loss books and videos
• Excercise equipment
• Diet recipe books
• Just about any “How to” manual
• Edu-tainment games or movies for teens
• Budgeting tools for those who have trouble with finances
• A daily planner for someone who runs consistently late
• Books and documentaries that conflict with their views

You know what this means for your situation and recipient. If you’re truly following Rules #1 and #2, you will pretty much automatically avoid this pitfall.

Rule #5: Don’t Buy Them A Gift

If they say “Don’t buy me a gift,” take it seriously.

Well, not always. You can probably tell the difference between someone just saying that to make sure you come to their birthday dinner or whatever, and the person who is really asking you to not get a gift. Perhaps they can’t afford gifts in return, and don’t want to feel any sort of obligation. Respect that, and don’t buy them a gift.

Instead, you can give in other creative ways.

Try making something crafty, take them out to lunch or coffee, or give them a treasure of yours that they have long admired. Write a meaningful and appreciative note, show up on their doorstep with dinner and a movie, fix that broken hinge. Offer to babysit. You get the idea.

There are tons and tons of DIY tutorials for gifts that just take a little time and effort. And after all, there is a lot of truth in the old saying that it’s the thought that counts. When someone sees that you’ve put time and effort into a gift, they will be truly blessed by it.

Rule #6: Don’t Give Early

I know, I know, you’re just excited and you can’t wait to give the gift. That’s ok for you, but remember Rule #1 and that gift-giving is not about you. It’s about the recipient.

Most of the time, is much more satisfying for the person who receives the gift to open it on the date. Otherwise, the holiday or birthday or anniversary comes and they do not get to receive a gift, and that’s no fun at all.

Try not to put the recipient in that position by following proper gift-giving etiquette. Simply wait until the appropriate time to give the gift. No matter how excited you are, patience is a virtue!

Rule #7: Better Late Than Never

An on-time gift is ideal for proper gift-giving etiquette. But sometimes a gift arrives late. There are circumstances outside of our control, especially in the contemporary age of online shopping.

When a gift is custom made, personalized, shipped from far away, imported, arrives damaged, etc, there will come a time when the arrival of the gift is delayed. Even with the best planning these things happen, and even with the best companies and customer service.

At Northwest Gifts, we have boatloads of customers who receive their gifts on time and in perfect condition, in plenty of time to give for a birthday, holiday, or commemorative event.

But every now and then there is an issue… a shipping carrier delay due to a winter storm, a busier-than-expected production schedule, a human error. We work our hardest – and gladly so – to make sure that every gift is delivered quickly and perfectly.

The reality is that mistakes do happen. As with most great companies, when an error or delay occurs we will own up to it and take care of it as best as we can. However, that doesn’t change the fact that every now and again, the day comes and you don’t have the gift in hand.

Maybe you only found these awesome personalized quarter barrel signs two days before Christmas. There’s no time to get it delivered by December 25th, so what do you do? Get a lame gift card? Run to Best Buy for some electronic device?

No need. It’s perfectly fine, should the occasion justify it, to have a gift arrive late. We suggest to customers to get the personalized barrel sign, print off a picture of it, and wrap it up with a bottle of wine or stick it in their stocking along with a coffee gift card so they at least have something on Christmas.

(I seriously have this conversation multiple times every year in the few days before Christmas. Order your personalized gifts now!!)

Or perhaps you miss the party because are unavoidably detained. Maybe it is an illness, family emergency, or you get called in to work. Maybe the babysitter plan falls through, or your flight is delayed. Should you still gift the gift, even if it is late? Of course.

Better late than never.

Rule #8: Don’t Expect Anything In Return

This is essentially a variation on Rule #1. It’s not about you. Give generously, give with an open heart, and truly don’t expect anything in return.

Also, be careful to avoid comparing what you do receive with what you give. You may be able to afford more, or maybe you have fewer relatives. Maybe your friend just had their hours cut and they haven’t told anyone yet.

There are many and various reasons why your gifts won’t always be perfectly matched. Chief among these reasons is the simple fact that you are two different people, with unique personalities and life situations. Give your gift, and don’t expect the same – or anything, really – in return.

Rule #9: Actually Buy What Is Suggested

This should be common courtesy for everyone, but especially when parents request (or specifically do NOT request) specific gifts for their young ones.

If they have a rule against Barbies or toys with guns, respect it. If they ask for a donation to a charitable organization instead of a gift, do it.

Maybe they are trying to lose weight and ask for no edible gifts, maybe they are switching to all-digital and ask for no DVDs, or maybe they just want or don’t want specific things.

Whatever the request is, and no matter what the reasons are behind the request, good gift giving etiquette is to respect their wishes.

Rule #10: Don’t Get Too Personal

This rule depends on the setting and on your relationship with the recipient. It’s important to keep in mind what is and is not appropriate for different occasions.

For instance, you should never bring personal products as a gift for a co-worker. Perfume, cologne, and most clothing items are a little too intimate and should be avoided for office gift exchanges.

The same goes for most birthdays and other gift-giving occasions. Steer well clear of gifts with innuendo, lingerie, or any other items that are related to sex or the bedroom.

Rule #11: Keep Within Your Budget

It is perfectly acceptable to give a gift that fits within your budget. You do not need to feel bad if others give extravagant gifts; stick with what you know works for you. Give generously, but give realistically and within your means.

This doesn’t mean you can be a cheapskate; no one likes that. But a thoughtful and well-chosen gift can often be much more meaningful than the expensive latest gadget that need to be updated in six months.

Rule #12: Don’t Apologize for Your Gift

When you give a gift, don’t apologize for it. Sometimes, especially when Rule #10 applies, people will feel bad for just giving something small. Well, you don’t need to feel bad.

If your gift, no matter how small, is thoughtful and focused on the recipient, then they will appreciate it and you do not need to be ashamed of the size or cost of the gift.

Rule #13: Don’t Embarrass By Overspending

Well-intentioned though it may be, you won’t do a friend any favors by giving them some expensive and extravagant gift when they are out of work or have a lower income. In fact, you may simply embarrass them (and yourself), especially if they refuse your gift.

Proper gift giving etiquette says that your gift should be appropriate for both the occasion and the recipient.

If you are at a gathering of friends and a typical gift is a book, board game, or six-pack, you can provide a blessing by upping the ante just a bit. Perhaps you give a case of specialty craft brew instead of the six-pack, or a niche out-of-print board game they’ve been drooling over instead of something off the shelf at Target.

These types of gifts take it up a notch by giving them the best of the best. But it does not take it to the level of outright embarrassment, drawing attention to your wealth and their lack. That’s the key.

You can, of course, offer to pay rent or buy groceries, but they’ll probably say no, thanks. If you really would like to substantially bless someone by giving in their time of need, there are ways.

Drop off a couple bags of high-quality groceries on their porch, or leave a couple Benjamins in an envelope in their mailbox. But do so anonymously, and especially not in front of an entire party of friends and peers.

Rule #14: Wrap It

Presentation counts. Take the time, and take the effort the present your present the right way.

Wrap it in lovely wrapping paper, or upcycle old newspaper to reduce your carbon footprint. Use a nice gift bag and tissue paper, and save the ones you receive so that you can re-gift the gift bags.

Side note: Some people insist that proper gift etiquette means that everything must be new. I disagree; I think that reducing waste trumps this custom, so I always recommend saving and reusing gift bags, tissue, and wrapping whenever possible. Of course you will want to discard ratty old beat up bags (or use them for your “special” friends who know how you roll), so everything within reason.

When you take the time to wrap your gift properly and make it look attractive, it is just one more way to show your affection and appreciation for the recipient.

Rule #15: Write a Note

A note or card is not only proper gift giving etiquette, it is also your chance to connect with the recipient with some thoughtful expressions put to paper. Plus, it makes the gift a bit more personal.

You know those little note card tabs that come on the handles of gift bags? Use them. Have you seen the birthday card aisle at the store? Buy one, but make sure you fill up the left inside section with your own handwriting.

Nothing says how much you care quite so well as a thoughtful and personal handwritten note. It’s the right way to give a gift.

Basic Manners

1. When asking for something, say “Please.”
2. When someone helps you or something is given to you, say “Thank you.”
3. When people speak to you, respond politely. Most often, people will ask “How are you?” You should tell them how you are, then ask them how they are.
4. Say “Yes, please” and “No, thank you.” Do not say “yep” or “nope.”
5. When you need someone’s attention, say “Excuse me.”
6. Do not interrupt others (unless it is an emergency).

Birthday Party Etiquette: Attending

PARENTS

• When invited to a party, read the invitation thoroughly and RSVP promtly. Do not wait until the day before or morning of the event. Add the event to your calender, and get a gift in advance.
• Do not ask if siblings can come; if the invitation doesn’t say it, assume no.
• Parents of young children are generally expected to attend. As the children move up in to elementary school, parents are not always expected to stay. Refer to the invitation, ask if you’re unsure.
• If you are uncomfortable dropping your child off, ask if you can stay when you RSVP. If they say no, you are free to decline the invitation.
• A reasonable birthday gift can be in the $10-20 range for just about any setting.
• Avoid cell phone use. This goes for parents and children alike.

CHILDREN

• When you arrive, say hello to the birthday child and their parents, and thank them for inviting you.
• Do not arrive to a party empty-handed.
• If an activity or the party itself is boring, keep it to yourself.
• Do not ask “When do we eat?” or “When is it time for cake?”
• If you have a cell phone, use it only to contact your parents.

Birthday Party Etiquette: Hosting

PARENTS

• Send invitations at least a week in advance, but no more than four weeks. Involve the birthday child in the invitation process.
• Ask for diet restrictions along with the RSVP, and do your best to comply or provide alternatives for any child with allergies or other dietary needs.
• Make it explicit if parents and siblings are welcome, and also let parents know if they are not required to stay. Some parents are uncomfortable with dropping their kids off, others appreciate a couple hours of kid-free time. Some parents do not have babysitting alternatives for the siblings and won’t be able to attend if the siblings cannot come.
• Be prepared for extra guests: Younger siblings, neighbors, others added at the last minute. Make enough food, get extra party favors and utensils. Be gracious when an unexpected guest arrives.
• Taking photos is expected, but ask the parents for permission if you plan on posting to social media. If they decline, assure them that you understand and respect their decision.
• Have a first-aid and spill kit ready for when accidents happen.

CHILDREN

• Think about the other kids’ feelings when handing out invitations at school. It is not very polite to talk about the party if the entire class is not being invited.
• You (and your parents, depending on age) should greet guests at the door and thank them for coming.
• Say “Thank you” for every gift to the person who gave it, even if you don’t like it. Do not say “I already have this.”
• When guests leave, the you (and your parents, depending on age) should walk them to the door and thank them for coming and for their gift.

SHOULD THE CHILD OPEN GIFTS?

That is up to you. Children love to open gifts right away, but there is also the chance of the toys being a distraction or disappointment, with either reaction being rude to the giver and other guests. However, you can counter this by using it as an opportunity to train your child beforehand to behave graciously.

Additionally, the guests love to see the joy on a child’s face when receiving their gift. On the other hand, guests (especially young children) can get bored during the present-unwrapping stage. You can avoid the boredom by opening presents later after guests have gone, by giving each child a party favor when their gift has been opened, or by passing gifts around so each child has a chance to look at it.

At the very least, speak with your child beforehand and remind them to:

1. Read the card/tag first
2. Open relatively quickly but without turning it into a frenzy
3. Admire it briefly; do not show disappointment if it is uninteresting or something you already have
4. Thank the person who gave the gift
5. Move on to the next one
6. Send a thank-you note later

DO I HAVE TO PROVIDE PARTY FAVORS?

No, you don’t have to do anything, but it is expected and a lovely gesture to show your appreciation for each child’s attendance.

And lastly, most children attending a birthday party hope to receive some fun party favors and get very excited about it.

Some options for party favors:

• Most local dollar stores have a large party supply section complete with goody bags and items to fill them, 10-20 filled bags may cost you about $8-15
• Find puppy stuffed animals at a dollar or discount store (or go big with the popular Beanie Boos) and do an “adopt a puppy” box by the door
• You can also send a simple homemade treat home: Individually wrapped cupcakes, cupcake-in-a-cone, baggies filled with chocolate covered pretzels, a DIY bake-a-cake mix with instructions

For more creative types, you can have a party activity in which the children make their own party favors:

• Dipped chocolate treats
• Custom decorated cookies

WHAT FOOD SHOULD I SERVE?

Edibles will vary depending on the time of the party. If the birthday party is scheduled during a normal lunchtime, say from 11:00 to 1:00, you should serve lunch items. Hot dogs and hamburgers are easy and popular, as is pizza, sandwiches, and chicken nuggets. Punch, lemonade, and juice are popular beverages; chips and fruit are great side dishes.

If adults are staying, feel free to include some more grown-up beverages such as Talking Rain, La Croix, and/or craft beer along with some non-kid oriented sides. When you’re providing lunch, dessert, drinks, and party favors for a big informal crowd, it’s fine to ask adults who are staying to bring a side dish.

Be considerate regarding allergies and intolerances. In our family, dairy is off-limits for half of our family members, so grilled fare such as hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken work well (gluten-free people can go sans-bun). Build-your-own entrees are also a good option: With tacos, nachos, or sandwiches guests can simply leave off the ingredients of their choice.

Same goes for dessert. Cake, cupcakes, and ice cream are practically synonymous with birthday parties. For those with intolerances, most supermarkets or specialty markets have dairy-free ice cream and gluten-free options.

1. Gifts should be given on the right date to count

The gift has to arrive by December 24th to count as a Christmas gift! We have to have it in hand by their birthday!

Nope.

I mean, yeah, if you’re the type of person who habitually forgets birthdays and anniversaries, constantly scrambling for a last-minute gift, you should probably focus on getting a gift ahead of time. Doing so shows that this person is important enough to you that you will spend the proper time preparing.

But let’s say you’re trying to get something really unique and perfectly suitable for someone who means a whole lot to you. You’ve been looking and looking, and finally – eureka! – you found it. Let’s say it’s a customized 1950’s flair Ice Cream Parlor sign made out of a real barrel head, for your vintage-loving rum enthusiast bestie who totally adores ice cream and is currently remodeling her kitchen. (And yes, such a product does exist.)

The trouble is, you found this and ordered it two days before her birthday, and since it’s custom-made, it’s going to show up after the holiday, birthday, graduation, etc. Guess what? That’s ok! If it’s something special that they will have for the rest of their life, a few days shouldn’t be a big deal. Take (or download) a picture of the item, slip it in a card, maybe toss in a small coffee gift card, and they’ll be fine with it.

2. Gifts should be tangible

Some people fall into the trap of thinking you have to give stuff. If there’s not something to unwrap then it doesn’t count – or so the theory goes.

Nope.

Many of us already have tons of stuff. The last thing we need is more. The idea that a present needs to be unwrapped is one of the most hobbling gift giving fallacies, because it will seriously limit your options for a truly meaningful gift.

Consider giving an experience – a date at a nice restaurant, a luxury photo shoot, a vacation, a day at the trampoline park. This sort of experiential gift will often be remembered and treasured long after all the other stuff has been tossed out.

3. Gifts should be wrapped beautifully

We love us some beautiful gift wrapping. A good wrapping job shows care and creativity, and can be a work of art. So just to be clear we’re not anti-wrapping fruitcakes.

But on the other hand… Seriously, do you need to waste $5.95 on a roll of paper that’s just going to be ripped up five minutes later and then tossed into a landfill? Do you need to keep an entire drawer filled with bows and ribbons and tissue paper, all of which will be sent directly to the trash bin?

Nope.

No need to waste paper. Upcycle an old gift bag, or use a piece of cloth to wrap the gift. Or accessorize the gift itself: A baby shower gift can come wrapped in a baby blanket, a housewarming gift in a kitchen towel, a Jurassic Park Blu-Ray wrapped in a “Clever Girl” T-shirt, a twenty-dollar bill can come “wrapped” in a wallet.

Heck, my family will often give a gift wrapped in whatever they can find: grocery bags, t-shirts that aren’t part of the gift, and the throw blanket from the back of the very couch we’ve been sitting on – none of these are out of the question in our house. It’s about celebrating someone we love with a meaningful gift, not necessarily about the wrapping job.*

*Although we’ve been known to get pretty crazy with fancy-upcycled-DIY-art wrapping as well.

Use your imagination, and you can easily save on both the financial and environmental cost of wrapping paper.

4. Gifts should be new

This one makes a certain amount of sense. After all, nothing goes over as poorly as re-gifting something you used twice, or passing along some old clothes, books, or movies. Does that mean all used gifts should be avoided?

Nope.

Some people are way into vintage and antiques – just look at mega-site Etsy, or mega-hits like Antiques Roadshow. Sometimes the very best gifts are used: a first-edition book, or a rare vinyl LP, or a 16-year-olds first car.

So don’t limit your search for the perfect gift to items in nice packaging at the mall or Costco. Think outside the box, and if it’s the perfect fit, it’s a great gift, regardless of how new it is.

5. Gifts should be unique

This is one of those gift giving fallacies that I can easily fall prey to. You, too, most likely. We all love to give that perfectly memorable, one-of-a-kind, “WOW” gift.

And those types of unique, creative gifts are great; in fact, that’s our main goal at Northwest Gifts – to provide a stellar selection of unique, memorable, and “wow“-worthy gifts. So does that mean you should always try to get the most interesting and unique gift possible?

Nope.

Sometimes it’s ok to do. We totally recommend going the extra mile, finding that “just perfect” gift they totally love. But you can’t always top last year’s gift, and sometimes people simply try too hard.

The fallacy is in thinking it’s a bad thing to get them something simple, something practical, or something that they said they want. So maybe the Batman trilogy on Blu-Ray isn’t the most unique gift in the world – so what? If someone likes Batman, get them Batman. You don’t need to find some weird hand-knit batman beanie mask that they’ll never wear in real life. Just get them the Blu-Ray… the one they actually want.

6. Gifts should be expensive

Parents will often fall into this when getting the kids Christmas presents. (I know we do!) Child A has 3 presents that cost $100, and we found 2 **completely perfect** presents for Child B that set us back just $45. So we owe Child B another $55, right?

Or maybe last year you bought your spouse an incredible necklace that cost a few grand. You don’t mind, because: love. This year, do you need to meet or exceed last year’s spend?

Nope.

Gifts shouldn’t be about the dollar amount. If it is, just write a check. Gift giving is great because it’s fun to give. It’s fun to find a great deal on a special item, or find that completely niche thing you didn’t even know existed until you stumbled across it online. It doesn’t have to cost much in order to make it special.

Of course, price is important; it’s part of what limits just about everyone’s gift giving, and there really is no way to compare a car, diamond jewelry, or an exotic vacation with a DVD from the $5 bin and a box of microwave popcorn.

But you know what? There’s a time for everything. Sometimes the right thing to do is splurge and get that cruise, that diamond-studded earring set, that billiards table, that piano. And other times the right thing to do is give a $20 coffee gift card. The rule that gifts need to be expensive is bogus. The important thing is giving generously and thoughtfully with where you are at in life.

7. Gifts should be reciprocal

Oh shoot, she got me a $50-60 gift and mine was only $20! Darn, he gave me a gift and I didn’t give him one…. What the heck, why did I go out of my way to get this super special custom-ordered personalized vintage plaque for this couple, when they just picked me up a book from the bookstore?

Nope, nope, nope. You’re missing the whole point.

Gift giving is about giving. A gift isn’t an exchange – that’s commerce, and we do it way too much anyways. Gift giving is about giving. Give with a generous heart, and receive without feeling obligation. You shouldn’t feel guilt when your gift (or lack of gift) doesn’t compare with their pricey one. And vice versa.

We all like to repay our debts, and no one likes to feel like they owe anyone anything. That’s all fine and good. But don’t bring that in to gift giving, and don’t put up with others doing it to you.
