It is hard to judge a person’s size, and there are many shelters and ministries that provide decent used clothing (include a list of such places in your care kit), but good, clean socks and gloves are a huge necessity and much harder to come by than, say, a t-shirt.

• Bandages (large ones, especially useful for blisters)

Large items, because they are difficult to carry.

If you do choose to include soap (or anything with a fragrance), make sure it is well-packaged and sealed. A bar of soap should be put in its own ziploc bag. Why? Well, especially if you have food items, the fragrances will affect the food.

After all the research and asking professionals and trial and error, here is my personal rendition of a light, tight homeless care kit that packs the most amount of blessing in the smallest amount of space.

This also balances cost so you can afford to give out more.

For each kit:

• Gallon plastic bag with zipper (1 x $0.20)
• Handwritten note of encouragement
• Printout of local resources
• Nice wool socks (1 x $4-6)
• Water bottle (1 x $0.35)
• Tuna cracker pack (1 x $1)
• Nail clippers (1 x $0.50)
• Large bandages (5 x $0.15)
• Individually wrapped wet wipes (5 x $0.05)

Total size: 10″ x 6″ x 4″ (approximate)

Total cost: $7-10 per pack, depending on actual price and if you get bulk.

Let’s take a little closer look at each item.

PLASTIC BAG

You’ll want to start with a nice zipper plastic bag. Why the zipper? The regular types tent to stop sealing after opening and closing a few times.

Spend the extra pennies to get the nice ones, and the person who receives this will get a bonus reusable bag they can use to store important personal effects after they use the items from the care kit.

HAND WRITTEN NOTE

It is very important, IMO, to write a note by hand.

Why? It shows that you care.

Just like a hand-written thank you note, hand-written invitations, or anything else.

You can put a tract inside, but a personal note is a must. Everyone sees the pre-printed tracts like junk mail – one glance tells you what it is, and it gets tossed.

Instead, write why you are giving this care kit, that you love, care for, value them, and include a Bible verse or prayer of blessing. This will go much further than a tract that you spent zero effort on.

For our kits, we had blank cards with envelopes in which we wrote Bible verses and notes of encouragement. The kids helped out, copying down some verses and also coming up with their own encouragements.

We thought that having several people write in a note was a good way to show that more than one person is caring for the recipient through each package.

Just make sure you think through what you write so that your notes don’t sound condescending, and proof-read anything written by kids.

LIST OF LOCAL RESOURCES

Additionally, along with the note you can print a list of local homeless resources.

Include local homeless shelters and soup kitchens. List where they can get a hot meal or shower, a haircut, help with jobs or addiction recovery, a bed for the night, clothing, restrooms, and anything else. Contact the local shelters and ask them for recommendations.

We included the contact info for the nearest (and to our knowledge, best) shelter in the area and printed it, four to a page, then cut them out and slipped one into each card.

The note included some details of what the shelter offers – lodging, showers, food, haircuts, addiction recovery, etc.

NICE WOOL SOCKS

Once again, this is simply the #1 most needed item. Even if you’re doing homeless hygiene kits that focus on hygienic needs, socks will go a long ways towards making your kit a genuine blessing bag.

Durable, warm, cozy, high-quality socks are a must for people who walk almost everywhere in the thickest boots they can find.

You can go cheap on everything else, but don’t skimp on the socks.

BOTTLED WATER

Proper hydration is difficult when you are out on the streets. Bottled water takes up a lot of space in your care package, but they can drink it right away or toss it if they need to.

If they need the water, it is at very little cost to you and a huge, huge, immediate blessing.

If they don’t need it, again, very little cost and a plastic water bottle is very easy to toss.

TUNA CRACKER PACK

These little packs have good protein, include carbs, keep for a while, don’t melt, and are delicious.

This seems to be one of the best balances between healthy (but perishable) and non-perishable (but super unhealthy).

You can also substitute other protein and carbohydrate-rich foods with a long shelf life, like individually packaged beef jerky/sticks or peanut butter crackers.

NAIL CLIPPERS

Nail clippers are a simple tool that is easily taken for granted. It’s the little things that can make a huge difference.

You can get them at the dollar store or order in bulk online for less, and it will be a much-appreciated and oft-used item.

LARGE BANDAGES

Primarily for blisters. Think about it: if you are on your feet all day, walking everywhere you need to go, how often are you going to get chafed skin, blister, and sores?

Get a bulk pack of large 3-4″ bandaids and divide them up in little baggies to go inside all the homeless care kits you pack.

WET WIPES

Another no-brainer, once you think of it. Wet wipes, aka baby wipes, are a small, portable, handy, and appreciated luxury. Go for the individually wrapped ones.

What not to give a homeless person

We’ve mentioned several of these items above, but here is everything to avoid in one place:

• Cash
• Matches
• Perishable items
• Sticky, crunchy, or hard foods like gum or nuts (potential dental issues)
• Sugary foods
• Soaps and fragrant items
• Mouthwash
• Large items
• Clothes that must be a specific size
• Sharp objects (disposable razors, etc)

Gift cards can be ok, especially if they are for a local restaurant, a grocery store, or for gas. But even then most professionals who work with the homeless community recommend that you do not give anything of value that could be sold or traded.

Tips for great care packages

Try to keep the bags small. Not everyone can carry around a lot of stuff, so aim for fewer but better items.

Write a personal note. Write – in your own handwriting – a card that says their welfare is important to you, that they are loved, that you are praying for them, that they are valued, etc. Feel free to mention why you are doing this; perhaps as an expression of your faith, because you’ve been there yourself, etc.

Include a list of resources. Addresses for the local gospel rescue mission, men’s shelter, women’s shelter, places they can get meals, shelter, and showers, where they can receive emegerncy medical services, and more. Contact your local shelter and ask them, as they will be an invaluable resource with a hands-on knowledge of the needs of the homeless in your area, plus what resources are available.

Take your time. Pull the car over and get out and talk if you can. Ask their name, their story. A hand-delivered care package, a few minutes of conversation, a smile, genuine eye contact, all this can go a long ways towards showing someone that they are important, valued, and loved.

Ask to pray with them. Not everyone will say yes, and that’s ok. Respect their wishes, but if they say yes, pray for them and that they would be blessed. Also pray before and after you give the homeless care package.

Be safe. Most homeless men and women are not dangerous. They are people just like anyone else. Still, it is wise to be in a group when handing out homeless kits, especially if you are going to stop and get out.

The entire time we’re bombarded with a ridiculous amount of advertising, and can only escape it by turning on a Netflix special Christmas movie with a bunch of product placements and a heartwarming message that it’s all about, you know, love or something.

The commercialism is so pervasive I’m not even sure we can see it for what it is.

One small way to #resist? Don’t go to the mall – go to the thrift store instead. Don’t browse all the holiday deals online – spend an afternoon at the local antique mall and think about what might be meaningful to the people on your list.

One year when I was young, my family decided to do only used gifts for Christmas. Now I realize it was probably because we were dirt poor and didn’t have many other options, but all five of us kids thought it was brilliant.

Everyone has their personal idea of what is beautiful, so keep them in mind as you shop for art.

Are they more of the watercolor painting type? Or more modern and streamlined? Do they love color or prefer black and white? Paintings or photographs? You get the idea.

6. Vintage advertisements

A lot of thrift stores, antique stores, and book shops will have a little section of vintage advertisements. These can be a fun and quirky way to decorate a space!

3 Ways to Inspire Romance with a Scavenger Hunt

I think there are three main ways to make your scavenger hunt romantic.

1. Romantic clues
2. A romantic “journey” along the way
3. A romantic prize at the end

Romantic clues. Use the clues themselves to inject romance into the hunt. Describe normal household objects and locations in sexy ways. Or have the clues lead you on a journey through meaningful items and memories in your home that are significant in your relationship.

A romantic journey. Have the clues lead to places that are already special (where you proposed; where you first met) or are naturally romantic (a beautiful place to watch the sunset; a restaurant with a candelit table for two).

A romantic prize. Give a gift that is personal. It could be an item your spouse has been wanting for a long time; but probably much more romantic is something that you create, such as a baby cradle you make by hand, a scrapbook of your love notes and photos, or a long handwritten love letter.

Easy DIY Romantic Scavenger Hunt

All right, so here’s how you create your special scavenger hunt:

• Start with your prize: What does the final clue lead to? Where is the final clue going to be?
• Get some fancy paper or colorful card stock on which to write your clues; or, at a minimum, cut the paper into cute heart shapes
• Decide on the length of the scavenger hunt:
  • 15-20 minutes as a prelude to your date night or a special surprise – aim for 4-8 clues, set up around the house or walking distance
  • 1-2 hours, where the scavenger hunt is the date – aim for 5-20 clues, starting with a handful around the house and then leading on from there. To avoid having to drive all around town to set up, keep the clues on you and hand them out when they get to the correct location
• Think through and set up the clues in reverse order (see below for scavenger hunt clue ideas)
• Reference meaningful and romantic aspects of your relationship

The title of this post has to do with “Easy” DIY romantic scavenger hunt ideas, so we’re mostly trying to keep it simple.

You can, of course, go as wild as you want with this.

Extra credit: Use rhyming phrases.

Double extra credit: Write it so that when the clues are assembled, it makes a complete poem. Or use the first letter in each clue to create an acrostic that says his/her name, “I love you,” or your choice romantic sentiment.

Triple extra credit: Set it up so that the clues lead across town. Do a ton of clues, so that the hunt leads you along on your date – to a food truck for appetizers, a favorite bar for drinks, a walk through the park, a restaurant with a candlelit table for two, and so on.

Free Romantic Scavenger Hunt Clues

Here are some starter clues for a couples scavenger hunt.

By “starter clues” I mean we’re not doing all the work for you (sorry!); rather, these are phrases you can easily modify and work into your clues as you’re crafting your hunt.

Practical Tips

Start at the end. Choose the gift or prize before you start, and also the location for the final clue. From there, work backwards to create each clue.

Use colorful paper or card stock. You can, of course, use anything in a pinch. Plain old white paper works just fine, but it does kinda convey a “just wingin’ it” vibe. If you ise, say, red paper cut into the shape of a heart – that is easily identifiable and shows that you’ve put effort into it.

Include items, locations, and references that are special to your relationship. For example, a clue referring to where you were when you found out you were having a baby, or that beloved book of Emily Dickinson poems you gave on your 3rd anniversary – those are better places to hide the next clue than “Where we keep the dog food.”

Aim for balance. Keep the clues simple, so as not to be frustratingly difficult riddles, but also not-too-obvious. Do enough clues to make it a memorable adventure, but not so many that it gets boring. Four to eight clues seems to be about the right amount. If you’re going around town, do a handful at home and then 3-4 throughout the city.

Scavenger Hunt for Date Night

If you’re cooking up a romantic scavenger hunt for a date night, tie it together with a theme.

For example, let’s say you’re taking her out to her favorite Italian restaurant. Clues can refer to the pantry where you keep a stash of noodles, the globe you have in the den (stick the clue onto the general vicinity of Italy/Europe), and your old DVD copy of The Godfather (ok, fine, Under the Tuscan Sun would also suffice).

Have the final clue either lead to someplace in your home with a description of the date (photos, printed reservations, tickets, or a note describing your date plans) or have the last clue(s) lead you out of the house towards your destination.

If your scavenger hunt is your date night, have fun with it! Lead the two of you to your favorite spots, and discover new ones. Include places for refreshment (stop for drinks, coffee, appetizers, dessert) and also places to enjoy just being together (the beach, boardwalk, hiking trails, walking paths, parks).

Scavenger Hunt for Anniversary

For an anniversary, you can simply do the “Date Night” ideas listed above to create a special – and easy – night of fun.

But to make it more specific to your anniversary, there are three considerations for creating a meaningfully romantic scavenger hunt.

Look back. Have your clues review the wonderful times you’ve shared together in the past. Refer to your wedding day, or past anniversary gifts, or other milestones in your time together. Remembering your past is important for every relationship.

Look forward. Include things that point to your hopes and dreams for the future. Are you thinking about buying a house or starting a family? Have you been planning that special trip overseas, or trying to make more regular time to simply spend together? Incorporate those ideas into your treasure hunt.

Be here now. The wonderful thing about great relationships is that you can always say or do something special to strengthen and build it up. Be present, and focus on creating a delightful, memorable experience right now.

WHAT IS A REED DIFFUSER?

A reed diffuser, or stick diffuser, for essential oils is one of many ways to get the aroma and mood-lifting effects of essential oil spread through the air. It is completely natural and does not require any batteries or electricity.

In essence, a reed diffuser is a container that holds essential oils with several small wooden reeds sticking out of it. An essential oil mixture soaks into the reeds, travels up them, and then gets released into the air through evaporation.

The $4 Essential Oil Reed Diffuser

ITEMS NEEDED

You need just a few things in order to make your reed diffuser. Most of these can be purchased at any dollar, discount, craft, or department store.

• Glass bottle. Preferably one with a narrow opening. The narrower the opening, the less loss to evaporation. Check your local dollar store – Cost: $1.
• Bamboo skewer sticks. A pack of thin bamboo skewer sticks works great for diffusing essential oil. Dollar store can be hit or miss. We found ours at WalMart – Cost: $0.94
• Distilled water. You will need a substance to mix with the essential oils, since it only takes a few drops. Many people use light oils like safflower or sweet almond oil to minimize evaporation, but for a low-cost diffuser distilled water works just fine. We had bottles of distilled water on hand so our cost was about twenty-five cents. Worst case scenario you can grab a single bottle from just about any store – Cost $1.
• Isopropyl alcohol. AKA rubbing alcohol. If you use water as the essential oil carrier, you will want to use some rubbing alcohol (vodka also works) to help speed up the oils travel up the sticks. Plus it helps keep bacteria from building up in the diffuser. Check your local dollar store – Cost: $1.
• Essential oils. We’re not including the cost of essential oils, since these can vary quite a bit. You’ll just need a few drops of your favorite oil(s).

Total cost: $3-4. Since we got the bottle and alcohol at the dollar store, the reeds at WalMart, and had a cheap bottle of distilled water on hand from a larger package (about $0.25 cost), our actual cost was about $3.19.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN REED DIFFUSER

Once you have your materials together, you can easily make your own DIY essential oil reed diffuser. Here’s how:

1. Wash out and dry the glass vase or jar
2. Mix together:
   • 1 cup distilled water
   • 1 tbsp isopropyl alcohol
   • 6-12 drops of essential oil
3. Pour essential oil mixture into the vase
4. Add 4-15 reeds or bamboo sticks

TIPS & TRICKS

Rattan Reeds VS Bamboo Skewers

Bamboo skewers are cheap. We bought ours for $0.94 at the local department store. You can also get them online. Here’s a set of rattan reeds that looks pretty good.

Rattan reeds work a little better than skewers, but for a low-budget option you really can’t beat the bamboo skewer sticks.

How to Get More Scent 

The more often you flip the sticks, the more scent you get. The oil mix soaks into the wood sticks and slowly travels up, aided by the alcohol. To release more scent, flip the reeds on their ends so that the well-soaked end is up in the air.

Another way to get more scent is to increase the number of reeds. In larger open rooms, use 10-15 sticks. In a smaller area such as a bathroom you may prefer 4-8 so that the diffusion of oils does not overwhelm the room.

And of course the fail-safe way to get more scent is to use more drops of essential oil. But since that is the highest-cost part of your diffusion system, you might want to try the other options first.

Prevent Evaporation

You can extend the usage life of your mixture by minimizing water loss due to evaporation. The way to do this is by getting a glass jar or vase with the most narrow opening possible. You can also use a cork lid or mason jar lid and drill holes for the sticks to poke through.
