The Massive List of Family-Friendly Movies That Grownups Love Too

Last updated on

This is your go-to list for great family-friendly movies that grownups love too. Nearly 500 clean family-friendly movies that are appropriate for all ages, each one of these is highly rated and well-reviewed so you know that the parents will enjoy it as well.

If you make it to the end, you’ll be rewarded with access to a printable checklist, organized alphabetically by decade. PLUS a little bonus from a little-known comedic virtuoso.

The main list below is simply alphabetized.

Clean Movies for Grownups and Kids

Focus for This List of Family-Friendly Movies

The goal in creating this list was threefold, to provide you with:

  • Tons of fairly clean movies
  • Films that succeed in what they are trying to do, so that adults will enjoy them
  • A go-to checklist for family movie night
  • Obscure and classic movies from other decades that you might overlook
  • Clean movies that grownups and older teens can appreciate

For these reasons, I’ve left off lots of animated movies (you already know about those) and classic movies (that would be worthy of another lengthy list).

This list, instead, focuses on the traditional “family-friendly” film. Mostly. There are tons of great, entertaining, and powerful movies outside that category, and of course plenty of fun and worthwhile gems within it.

Who This List Is For

This list of family-friendly movies is ideal for

  • Families with younger children (look for “Family)
  • Adults and teens who want to avoid a lot of muck (look for “Adult“)
  • Educating young film buffs with age-appropriate content
  • Christians and other religious families
  • Viewers who mainly want to avoid excessive sex/nudity
  • Those who want to rewatch some of the “classic” family movies from past decades

What This List Does and Does Not Include

CATEGORIES/GENRES

For various reasons, I’ve decided to leave off several entire categories of movies: Animated, foreign, documentaries, and classics. This helps keep the list focused on the more modern definition of a family film. Plus the list would have been way, way longer.

However, here and there I have included a few super-top-notch titles in those categories. These are ones that I think are just too good to miss. Generally lesser-known gems, like the classic screwball comedy/musical Thoroughly Modern Millie with Julie Andrews or the sublime animated historical fantasy The Secret of Kells. I think you’ll appreciate these little surprises.

A handful of Christian/religious movies have made the list, but only the best of the best. Maybe I’ll make a list of great Christian movies soon.

Sidebar: Interestingly, some of the more highly rated Christian movies are kind of cheesy, whereas the lower-rated ones can sometimes be excellent. Star ratings can often have more to do with the marketing campaign than anything else, which is a shame. A bit more on critical reviews and star ratings below.

RATING

I have kept it limited to only G and PG rated films. There are plenty of PG-13 movies that are great films and pretty family-friendly, but that’s not what this list is for. Plus, you’re probably already aware of most of them and it pushes the content rating up a notch. So these are all PG or less.

CRITICAL REVIEWS

Everything on here is highly reviewed. Almost everything is 6.5 stars or higher on IMDb. However, it is pretty apparent that the masses don’t have the best judgment in movies, especially when it comes to family-friendly ones.

For instance, the Kevin James vehicle Paul Blart: Mall Cop and the obscure Baby’s Day Out from 1994 are both masterpieces of family-friendly slapstick. Both are rated between 5 and 6 stars (out of 10) on IMDb. I’m not sure what viewers of those movies would be expecting. The intended audience is not Oscar voters, but kids and families.

And movies like that – which succeed in what they are trying to accomplish – get a place on this list.

CONTENT

Lastly, there is (almost) no nudity or sex. There may be a few innuendos or implied encounters, but overall this is a pretty tame list.

I can’t 100% guarantee that every title on here is perfectly clean in this regard. After all, my memory may be faulty or perhaps my sources for content reviews didn’t catch something. So please use common sense and do your due diligence.

List Key

I’ve included a few notations that will help you narrow down titles when searching for family-friendly movies to watch. The list below is alphabetized and includes the release year in parenthesis. There are three additional notes: Star, Family, and Adult.

Star (which will be an asterisk like this: *) – Highly recommended. Listed before each title.

Family – Good for the youngsters, fairly enjoyable for adults. Can include some drama and swearing, but the key is that it is a film intended for families or kids. So this includes everything from cute-cuddly-and-clean Babe to the potty-mouthed Goonies to the mature family drama of My Girl. But by and large these will be your standard “family” films.

Adult – Fairly clean, but will probably be most appreciated by grownups and teens. These are movies intended for adults and teens. Keep in mind that many of these “adult” films are still family-friendly and can be enjoyed by younger viewers, but it also can include content like some swearing, sensuality, violence, mature themes, etc. Examples of these movies would be real-life dramas like Apollo 13 and Remember the Titans along with adaptations of Jane Austen and other literature classics/costume dramas. Use some basic discretion and common sense for your situation.

All right, here we go!
