People can jeer and jab all they want about Wes Anderson’s unique approach to film, but you cannot dispute his ability to make a fantastic movie. And Fantastic Mr. Fox is no exception. In one of the best book-to-movie adaptations out there, Roald Dahl’s tale of Mr. Fox and his family comes to life in stop-motion perfection. 

We find Mr. Fox fulfilling his promise to his wife Felicity to abandon his farm-raiding ways and live a quiet, non-dangerous life with their son Ash. But Mr. Fox can only resist the pull of his old ways for so long and eventually gives in, instigating horrid retaliation from the three gluttonous farmers from which he steals.

Lots of life lessons and lots of laughter fill this critical acclaim earning film that will absolutely delight you.

14. Holes (2003)

7.0 IMDB / 78% RT

The family favorite Holes, based on a novel by the same title, is full of laughs, adventure, and life lessons that ring true even in today’s climate.

Stanley Yelnats (played by a young Shia LeBeouf) is an unlucky teen who is wrongfully convicted of theft and sentenced to serve out his time at Camp Green Lake, Texas. Once a lush, thriving, lakeside community, nothing remains but a dustbowl of an old lakebed where underaged convicts dig holes all. day. long. 

During his time there, Stanley forms some alliances and friendships while slowly uncovering the history of the site, as well as his family’s long-lost connection to it. A great family flick that you really don’t want to miss.

15. Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (2022)

This elegant, understated, and heartwarming film may not make you laugh out loud, but it will bring plenty of smiles to your face so we’re happy to categorize it as a comedy. 

Lesley Manville stars as Ada Harris, a lonely London cleaning lady in the 1950s who begins to dream of owning a dress made by Dior. She works, saves, and finally scrapes together enough to purchase the dress, only to realize…well, you’ll just have to watch it. You may have just found a new favorite.

A thoroughly enjoyable and beautiful movie, the 1992 version starring Angela Landsbury and Omar Sharriff is equally charming.

16. Galaxy Quest (1999)

7.4 IMDB / 90% RT

If you are equally as much of a sci-fi fan as you are a comedy fan, then Galaxy Quest would be a great pick for family movie night! 

A quirky cast of greats like Tim Allen, Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver team up in this intergalactic romp as the washed up cast of a 70’s hit sci-fi series. Past their prime and time in the limelight, the crew is now grown weary of reprising their roles at conventions and scratching out a living through reruns.

Bored and a bit depressed, the team is suddenly beamed aboard a real alien spacecraft, whose crew —  believing them to be real space heroes — is seeking their help to fight off invaders. Hilarity and adventure ensues, coupled with topnotch on-screen energy and dynamic from the ensemble cast.

17. Hook (1991)

Picking up forty years after his last adventure in Neverland, Peter Pan — now Peter Banning (Robin Williams) — is an overworked and negligent father in the real world, with no memory of his former life.

His wife Moira happens to be the granddaughter of none other than his old friend Wendy Darling. The aged Wendy tells Peter of his real identity, though he refuses to believe her stories of their adventures together in Neverland. That is until his children are kidnapped by his supposed old nemesis, Captain Hook (played by Dustin Hoffman).

Peter is then faced with the reality of his true identity, the loss of his imagination, and the near loss of his children, though he is helped through his trials by a crew of old friends who still believe in him. 

Fun, delightfully entertaining, and boasting a supporting cast of too many greats, Hook is one of the best funny clean movies that you don’t want to miss out on. 

18. Elf (2003)

A wonderfully clean comedy that’s also a great Christmas movie? Yes, please!

From the moment of its release, Elf was one of those instant classics. Will Ferrell plays Buddy, an oversized elf that just can’t seem to understand why he doesn’t (quite literally) fit in at the North Pole. Frustrated and feeling dejected, Buddy heads to New York City to find his “real father.” 

Despite his childlike conduct and lack of understanding of the real world, Buddy manages to eventually win over pretty much everyone he meets, including his new-found father.

Lots of charm, lots of laughs, and lots of Christmas shenanigans make this flick an absolute winner.

19. The Return of the Pink Panther (1975)

C’mon. You can’t not love Peter Sellers as the bumbling Inspector Jaques Clouseau!

In this sequel to 1963’s The Pink Panther, Clouseau sets out in pursuit of the notorious thief known only as “the Phantom,” whom he believes has stolen the pink panther diamond. Determined to win back his reinstatement by solving the case, Clouseau goes on a hilarious hunt following his *usually wrong* instincts and poor detective skills.

Packed with laughs and good-hearted fun, it’s a funny movie the whole family will enjoy.

20. Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)

7.9 IMDB / 92% RT

Boy-oh boy, what a film. Arsenic and Old Lace will have you crying with laughter once you’re through being thoroughly confused. 

Cary Grant plays Mortimer Brewster, a congenial newspaperman and writer who has finally found the woman he wants to marry, and so he does. Marry, that is, and on Halloween night. Thrilled to announce the news of his nuptials to the two spinster aunts that raised him, he returns home. 

Knowing full-well that a bit of a “mad gene” runs in his family (for instance, his uncle believes himself to be Teddy Roosevelt), Mortimer is still shocked to discover the dark secret his sweet old aunts have been hiding.

Chaotic and incredibly charming, this dark comedy has to be one of my all-time faves, and is just a great movie when you want to laugh ’til your belly hurts.

Author’s tip: If you’re looking for some more of the best clean comedies and you don’t mind the occasional black and white, old films (usually pre-1960) are a pretty safe bet. After all, the saying “They just don’t make movies like they used to.” came from somewhere.

Whether you’re Greek or not, you’ll adore this hilarious and refreshing story of true love and the comedies of family life.

The letter was written by a woman named Elizabeth to her lover, and Stanton quickly becomes obsessed with discovering the identities of the two people and what became of their relationship.

Based on one of my favorite books ever, this wonderful movie (with a regrettable title IMO) is a must see!

Another great pick for a mom and daughter movie night, Sarah, Plain and Tall is just a gem of cinematic history.

The 1995 remake with Harrison Ford is also clean and well worth seeing.

Learning about the Civil War never seemed so lush and inviting as it does with Gone With the Wind! This classic movie holds up and stands the test of time.

It’s hard to believe they did it all in 1939, before CGI and special effects, but the reason it all works is because of the romance and excellent acting at the heart of the film.

This movie is a classic for a reason, and you’ll forget you’re watching an “old” movie. Every age will fall in love with it!

Who says you can’t find true love in middle age? This adorable, acclaimed story stars Martin Landau as a bachelor butcher who falls for a teacher. But will he hearken to his heart or the discouragement of his family?

We can’t get enough of this ‘60s tale: from the fashion to the cars to the makeup to, well, everything! 

Audrey Hepburn plays Holly Golightly, a hill-billy turned New York socialite running from a difficult past and a not-so-amiable present. When she meets Paul Varjak, a young man that moves into her brownstone, her life is turned upside down as he attempts to domesticate her.

It’s not really a rom-com in the truest sense, it’s more of a dramady, if you will. 

59. Christmas in Connecticut (1945)

The only thing better than a great love story is one set at Christmas time, right? 

Christmas in Connecticut hits all the right notes and will leave you feeling full of hope, no matter the season. This fun story, filled with lots of witty one-liners and sweet (yet not overbearing) romance, will leave you with lots of life lessons, too.

60. An Affair to Remember (1957)

Because these are all from the 1960’s or earlier, the content is pretty tame. Minimal swear words, zero sex (maybe a bit of innuendo), and overly-dramatic-but-not-very-graphic violence. Psycho is, perhaps, the exception; it still freaks me out. A Touch of Evil also has some adult content; tame by today’s standards, but still pretty gritty.

4. Double Indemnity (1944)

An insurance salesman gets falls for the wife of one of his clients, and the two hatch a plot to murder the husband, make it look like an accident, and walk away with the insurance money.

But the salesman’s best friend – who is also the company’s claims analyst – begins the question the story.

5. And Then There Were None (1945)

Seven guests arrive on a mysterious private island, then begin getting killed off one by one. One of Agatha Christie’s finest books adapted into one of the best classic mystery films of all time.

6. The Big Sleep (1946)

A noir classic featuring the iconic private eye Philip Marlowe. Marlowe, embodied by the incomparable Humphrey Bogart, is hired by a rich family to help their daughter out of problems stemming from some gambling debts. But everything is not as it seems. Before the complex case is over, he’s seen murder, blackmail, and what might be love.

Starring Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, and John Ridgely. Directed by the ever-marvelous Howard Hawks.

7. The Fallen Idol (1948)

A butler working in the London foreign embassy office is accused of the murder of his wife after she falls to her death. Only one person knows the truth, and no one will listen to him because he is just a child.

A little-known classic dwarfed by the fame of the other late ’40s suspense movie from director Carol Reed and writer Graham Greene, The Third Man.

8. Sunset Boulevard (1950)

12. Night of the Hunter (1955)

Incredibly creepy story of a murderous false preacher, yet ultimately one of the most redemptive Christian films I’ve ever seen. An underrated classic.

13. The Killing (1956)

A heist film in classic noir style, complete with a complicated plot to steal a bag full of cash, backstabbing, intrigue, and a foreboding sense of “what will go wrong!”

Starring Sterling Hayden, Coleen Gray, Vince Edwards. Directed by Stanley Kubrick.

14. 23 Paces to Baker Street (1956)

A blind playwright overhears a sinister conversation in a pub but is dismissed by the police as a writer with an overactive imagination. With no official help available, he enlists his former fiancee along with his faithful manservant to search out and uncover the mysterious plot, which seems to center around the potential kidnapping of a young child.

Starring Van Johnson, Vera Miles, and Cecil Parker. Directed by Henry Hathaway, a prolific yet underrated director.

15. Touch of Evil (1958)

The title says it all… Charlton Heston plays a Mexican narcotics officer on honeymoon who gets embroiled in solving a car bomb murder just on the US side of the United States/Mexico border. Incredible noir-style lighting and cinematography with pitch-perfect directing by Orson Welles, who co-stars.

16. Vertigo (1958)

This one is the main reason for the word “mostly” in the title of this post. A true horror masterpiece, film buffs everywhere know “the shower scene.” Let’s just say you don’t want to check into Bates Motel.

18. Experiment in Terror (1962)

An edge-of-your-seat thriller with Glenn Ford at his terrifying best. Ford plays an asthmatic psychopath who strolls into a San Francisco band and demands the teller to rob her bank of $100,000…. or her sister will die.

Starring Glenn Ford, Lee Remick, Stefanie Powers. Directed by Blake Edwards, who also helmed Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Pink Panther series.

19. The Birds (1963)

A sleepy coastal town in California is terrorized by birds. There’s some blood, so this one probably isn’t for young ones, but it’s pretty tame by today’s standards. The suspense is what makes The Birds a legend.

20. Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)

During a rural summer picnic, a few students and a teacher from an Australian girls’ school vanish without a trace. Their absence frustrates and haunts the people left behind.

21. The Vanishing (1988)

This one is incredibly clean (perhaps one or two swear words) while being astonishingly frightening. There are no jump scenes, violence, or gore. It’s simply the story of a couple on a road trip, how one disappears, and the other’s compulsive search for the truth of what happened that day. The terror lies in the unknown.

In Dutch with English subtitles. The original title is Spoorloos, and this version is not to be confused with the much inferior 1993 American remake with Jeff Bridges and Kiefer Sutherland.

Not recommended for young children or for those who easily tend towards nightmares, but again, it’s totally “clean.”
